College Football News: Steve Spurrier Retires From South Carolina As Gamecocks Head Coach

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier has announced his retirement from the Gamecocks after 11 seasons with the school. According to Sports Illustrated, the 70-year-old Spurrier is stepping down as head coach after opening the season 0-4 in the SEC and 2-4 overall with South Carolina in six games.

According to Yahoo Sports, Gamecock Central reported that Spurrier informed the team about his decision after practice on Monday. Spurrier previously went 86-49 overall with the Gamecocks and won 44 of 84 games in SEC play over that time. Spurrier led the school to five bowl game victories and he helped bring the program to national prominence.

Spurrier previously was with the Florida Gators and Washington Redskins before coming to South Carolina. Spurrier has won 228 games in his career as a college head coach.
