Real Madrid took care of one of their most pressing questions this week after signing a contract extension with midfielder Xabi Alonso and that helps quell any interest from clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United, Man City, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Liverpool, as the two sides agreed on a new two-year contract extension.

According to the club and Alonso himself, the Real Madrid midfielder signed a contract extension on the deal that was set to expire at the end of this season and he now will be extended for the next two years. The 32-year-old star was mentioned in a number of rumors over the past few months, including about interest from English Premier League clubs like Manchester United, Man City, Chelsea as well as Liverpool and other reports had Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain also looking at him as a possible signing. Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said that he had hoped the team and Alonso would come to an agreement and Alonso posted the news on Twitter to confirm the deal.

The team also confirmed the deal and released a statement that said that the new contract will last through the 2016 season and expires in June and that Alonso will speak to the media later in the week about the contract at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and it comes after Alonso first came to the team back in 2009 after previously playing with Liverpool. Alonso came over on a 30 million deal and has appeared in over 200 games with the team and has won a La Liga title and while he will be out of the Copa del Rey match on Thursday, he is expected to return soon.

"Real Madrid communicates the extension of the contract linking Xabi Alonso with the club for two more seasons, until June 30, 2016," the statement said. "The player will talk in front of the media next Friday Jan. 10 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu's press room at 13.30."
