Real Madrid is pushing hard to sign Tottenham star Gareth Bale this summer and one former member of the club thinks it has to do with one thing and one things only, the possible exit of Cristiano Ronaldo from the team.

According to ESPNFC.com, former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon said that the club has shown such desperation in signing Cristiano Ronaldo due to the fact that he may leave the club at some point. Madrid is looking to put a record bid on Bale from Tottenham and assistant manager Zinedine Zidane said that he hopes a deal can get done quickly so both sides can move on. Florentino Perez has said that Ronaldo leaving is not an issue and while there is no extension on his contract that expires in 2015, he is not worried that the star will leave the Bernabeu.

Calderon previously left Real in 2009 and he said that the reason the club has put so much on the line for Bale is to help soften the blow of losing Ronaldo. He added that him leaving would be very tough for the club and he also mentioned that Ronaldo is unhappy with the way that the president of the club has acted and that last season when he tried to talk about renewing his contract, it did not go how he intended and now he could leave after the deal is up.

Bale has said that he would like to leave the Spurs and other clubs have shown interest in him as well and mentioned that he would like to come to Real. The Spurs at first were adamant that Bale was not going to move, but if the package comes in high enough the team could grant the deal and reports have now come out that the Spurs would like Luka Modric in return in the deal. Manchester United is also chasing the star and there is a good chance that they will be able to get him depending on the bid, as two players they wanted Thiago Alcantara went to Bayern Munich and Cesc Fabregas looks like he will at Barcelona.

"I think this is very good news for Real Madrid, but I think it is good for Tottenham too because they will get a lot of money," he said. "He is a fantastic player, and of course the top players are worth a lot to their clubs."

"This is a huge amount of money and it is always controversial in these days to pay that amount of money. I agreed with the fee for Cristiano at the time and it seems the Real president feels it is right to pay this money for Gareth Bale. I think [Bale move] will happen now. They have made many offers - they change the offers, try to offer different players."
