While having my pre-Super Bowl meal after playing football for a couple of hours, I was approached with an interesting question, "Hey Frankie, you're a sportsman right? What do you think about Michael Vick to the New York Jets?"
I briefly lost my appetite.
In theory, Vick looks like the man for the job. The Jets need help in their running game and people finally saw Mark Sanchez's as a mediocre quarterback, which is what he's been his entire career. Vick also has an arm stronger than half of the guys in the league at age 32.
However, there are two things Vick can't cure, which are where the Jets true struggles lie, he won't help produce offense since Vick is a habitual fumbler and though he's a scrambler, the pressure will always get to Vick in New York because the Jets don't possess a quality offensive line.
In 2012, Sanchez went down 34 times behind the line of scrimmage. Vick was sacked 28 times over in Philadelphia playing with the Eagles. Pass rushers were getting to Vick at record speed. Prior to one of the Eagles games last season, they were showing clips of defenders getting to Vick two seconds after the ball was snapped. In New York, offensive linemen get in the way and force fumbles, it would be difficult to imagine how Vick will hold on to the ball in New York.
The Jets might as well stick to a traditional quarterback. They tried mixing in the Wild Cat with Tim Tebow, but we were calling better plays in our Super Bowl two-hand touch game than Tony Sparano did in this so called "Wild Cat" formation all year long.
The Jets have to invest some money or use some draft picks on a better offensive line. Whoever is quarterbacking in New York next season needs protection. This should be their prime focus during the offseason.
The next thing the Jets should do is grab one of these free agent running backs that are now on the market. Ahmad Bradshaw is the freshest free agent as he was released by the New York Giants and Reggie Bush was rumored to not be receiving an extension from the Miami Dolphins.
Vick is past his prime and owed a ton a money, if he maintains a certain level of play. There's just no reason for the Jets to jump on that mess as they have enough trouble dealing with Tebow this offseason.
