Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Chris Canty Wants to Beat the Giants, DE Going Back to Texas?

Feb 07, 2013 08:41 AM EST

As the New York Giants released Chris Canty on Wednesday afternoon, the Dallas Cowboys could set their eyes on a defensive lineman as they can surely use some help stopping opposing quarterbacks.

The Cowboys aren't sure if they will re-sign their linebacker Anthony Spencer and boy did he carry a load in 2012.

Spencer, 28 and the No. 26 overall pick in 2007, had 11 sacks in 14 games played this past season. He becomes a free agent in 2013 and the Cowboys doubt they'd be able to resign him.

Though playing a different position, Canty could be a helpful hand on defense. Back in 2005, the Cowboys drafted Canty as their fourth round pick. He played his first four seasons in the NFL in Dallas. He was set to make over $12 million in the next two seasons, but the Giants thought it preferable to make cap space instead as they look to re-sign Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks.

Why should the Cowboys consider signing Canty, who only played nine games this past season?

Aside from the fact that he could come at a bargain, he's still hungry to still play in the NFL and wouldn't mind beating the Giants. When being interviewed by ESPN's Michael Kay, Canty was asked if he would like to join the New York Jets.

"All possibilities are out there on the table right now. So we have to find out what makes the most sense," said Canty after laughing.

Kay then digged a little deeper. Now this should interest Cowboy fanatics. Kay asked Canty if he would like the Giants to win or lose in 2013 after they released him.

Professional as always, Canty had this to say. "I want them to be able to compete. It's a tremendous organization. It's good for city. It's good for the National Football League when the New York Giants are playing well."

Probably not to impressive if you're a Cowboys fan, but then Canty followed with this, "That being said, I would love the opportunity to compete against the Giants."

If there's anybody that knows the Giants defense, it's Canty. More than knowing their plays, which will obviously get switched up, he knows the defensive linemen's habits and could share this with the Cowboys offensive line.

The Cowboys were close to winning the NFC East this past season, all they needed was win agains the Washington Redskins. They have enough offensive weapons. If they bolster their defense, their chances of winning could skyrocket.

What do you think about the Cowboys possibly reacquiring Canty? Would you agree with the move?
