The Kansas City Royals won Game 5 of the World Series on Sunday night over the New York Mets to win the championship 4-1. The Royals won the game 7-2 in extra innings and they came back from 2-0 down in the ninth inning after the decision Terry Collins made to leave in Matt Harvey to try and pitch a complete game.

The Royals scored five runs in the 12th inning to take the lead against the Mets and the team held tight to get the victory and won the World Series for the first time in decades. The Mets were up 2-0 in the top of the ninth inning and Collins appeared ready to bring in closer Jeurys Familia, but he was convinced by Harvey to stick with the starter. Harvey had been pitching brilliantly, but he allowed a walk to Lorenzo Cain and a double to Eric Hosmer and the Royals eventually tied the game.

Hosmer came around on an aggressive play to score the second run and Mets fans were stunned after coming into the inning up 2-0. Harvey had given up just four singles over eight shutout innings and 102 pitches and he convinced Collins to let him come back out. Collins said the decision is on him and that he should have went to Familia right away.

Salvador Perez won the World Series MVP, while Christian Colon had the winning hit with a single in the 12th inning to give Kansas City the lead. The Royals lost the World Series in seven games last season and this year they showed how resilient they are with late wins and comebacks. The team won in extra innings after a ninth inning home run in Game 1 and they came through in Game 5 after being down to complete the championship run.

The Mets started the game off with a home run from Curtis Granderson and later added another run against Edinson Volquez and that appeared to be enough for Harvey. But when it counted the most the Mets could not get things done and they ended up losing the game and the series. The Mets have as good of a starting rotation as anyone in the league, but it was not enough to win the series this year. Wade Davis came in and closed out the game for the Royals and now they are world champions.
