Rory Mcllroy of Northern Ireland takes his third shot on the 18th during the first round of the Deutsche Bank Championship at the TPC Boston on August 29, 2014 in Norton, Massachusetts. "

The PGA Tour leaderboard is live from the Deutsche Bank Championship golf tournament and the FedEx Cup is continuing towards the playoffs as names like Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Keegan Bradley, Henrik Stenson, Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott and Rickie Fowler tee off for first and second round coverage on NBC and The Golf Channel, while ESPN.com and the PGATour.com website have the live leaderboards.

McIlroy has been on fire this year and he is one of the leaders in the points standings and he is back at number one in the world. Keegan Bradley and a group of players are near the top, including McIlroy as well as Patrick Reed. Spieth and Jimmy Walker, while Luke Donald, Webb Simpson and Jason Day are close behind. McIlroy is now at number two in the FedEx standings after the Barclays and he will be looking to get into the top spot as things pick up outside Boston in Norton.

Hunter Mahan won the Barclays last week and that ended a streak for him and he finished his tournament hot, making three straight birdies to give him the victory from Paramus. That was the opening tournament of the playoffs for the FedEx Cup and Mahan had not won in 48 tournaments that spanned 30 months and he pulled ahead for the lead after a number of players took the top spot.

Jason Day and Jim Furyk also had strong performances and now Mahan has some momentum coming into the next week. McIlroy was looking for his fourth straight win and could not finish it off and he ended up tied for 22nd in the tournament and had a 70 to finish after being under that for a long streak. Mahan took over the top spot in the points standings and he leads McIlroy by a solid margin coming into the next week.

The top five is where everyone wants to be and right now it's Mahan ahead of McIlroy, Jimmy Walker, Matt Kuchar and Bubba Watson, while the rest of the top 10 has Furyk, Jason Day, Patrick Reed, Jordan Spieth and Cameron Tringale. Rickie Fowler is just outside the top 10 with Zach Johnson, Kevin Na and Sergio Garcia, ahead of Adam Scott. The BMW Championship is next on the schedule ahead of the TOUR Championship and then the Ryder Cup picks up from Scotland and that will be at the end of September.

McIlroy has had a magical year with the Open Championship and PGA major wins and now he is looking for more. Tiger Woods has had a nightmare of a year and now he is out with an injury and he is also looking for a new swing coach. Woods missed time with a back injury and he came off winning five times last year and now has not been in the mix at all at any tournament and this has basically been a lost year.
