Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Tony Romo To Miss Week 1 Preseason Game As Brandon Weeden Starting?

Aug 01, 2014 04:04 PM EDT

The Dallas Cowboys have Tony Romo back after he missed the final game of the season last year, but he may not be available when the team starts the preseason in Week 1, as ESPN.com reports that the Cowboys QB will likely not play in the opening preseason game and that means Brandon Weeden could get the start for the team against the San Diego Chargers.

According to ESPN.com, Romo said that he likely will play in the preseason after coming back from back surgery last December, but he will not play in Week 1. Last season be played in the preseason game after the opener in the Hall of Fame game against the Dolphins, coming in for a bit and completing six of eight passes for 88 yards and then he was fine for the season.

Romo said that he felt good after getting surgery and that the preseason has so far gone as he has expected and now he will look to get ready for the season. The Cowboys have high expectations for the season after missing the playoffs on the final game of the year again and they are looking to focus on the rushing game more to open things up for Romo. Dez Bryant comes back after a very strong season and he will be very key for the team if they want to win the division this year.

Last season Romo had one of his best seasons ever, passing for 3828 yards and 31 touchdowns with just 10 interceptions and he also completed over 63 percent of his passes. Romo is expected to be ready for the opener this season and while it's not always great to miss preseason games, Romo did not play in the first preseason game for the Cowboys last year while coming back from minor surgery and now the same deal will happen again.

You're constantly evaluating it and you're constantly, I don't want to say adjusting because you stick to the plan, but it's a progression," Romo said. "It's leading up to San Francisco [on Sept. 7 for the season opener]. I am going to play in the preseason, obviously. I think it's important. The first game, we'll talk about it as we move into the weekend."
