England manager Roy Hodgson was quite happy with the 0-0 draw against Ukraine in their World Cup qualifier Tuesday.

The result keeps England top of Group H, a point ahead of Montenegro and Ukraine, with two home games - against Montenegro and Poland - remaining.

Frank Lampard, making his 100th appearance for England, had the best chance for the visitors in Kiev, but uncharacteristically skewed his header wide at the death.

"I thought it was probably a fair result," Hodgson said. "We did very well and could have won it right at the last minute with Frank Lampard's header -- it was a good chance.

"Overall it was a big test for the players -- and don't forget we had lost seven players from the original squad.

"A lot of players had come into the squad who aren't normally there and aren't used to this level of performance and this level of pressure.

"So I think we have to be more than satisfied, especially as we gained the result without riding our luck in any way, we gained it because we were very good defensively.

"And if we had shown a little bit more composure in the final third, or maybe had a Rooney or a Sturridge available, we may have even got the goal we wanted."

England were suffering a bit of a crisis in the forward department and it showed with the away side not really looking convincing in attack.

"I don't think we were that adventurous, but on the other hand it was down to them to be adventurous, not us," Hodgson added. "We had to make certain we controlled them.

"We had one or two situations and perhaps we didn't quite have enough quality to make that count.

"But had we thrown caution to the wind and gone all out for the winner and then come away with a 0-1 defeat, which would have virtually ended our chances of topping the group, I don't think we would have got any thanks for that."
