England manager Roy Hodgson was satisfied with his side's performance against Moldova in their World Cup qualifier, but admitted the yellow card to two-goal hero Danny Welbeck marred the result.

Steven Gerrard opened the scoring for England before Rickie Lambert made it 2-0. Welbeck grabbed a brace to make it 4-0 for England, but a harsh yellow card picked up for kicking the ball away means the Manchester United forward will miss the game on Tuesday against Ukraine.

"The booking for Danny Welbeck has overshadowed the night, that's for sure," Hodgson said.

"He's been unbelievably unfortunate. We have already lost Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge and it makes life difficult for us.

I don't believe that was a yellow card offence. And his first yellow card came in Montenegro when we should have a penalty but he was booked for diving. So he's been unbelievably unfortunate and so have we. It takes the gloss off a good team performance.

"It's not many teams that can survive the loss of two quality center forwards like Rooney and Sturridge and win 4-0.

"The fact that we played well enough tonight and got a good win in what could have been a potentially tricky game won't do us any harm."

Welbeck admitted to having mixed feelings after the match at Wembley. "It's obviously very disappointing to get the yellow card," he said. "You are playing in front of thousands of fans and you can't always hear the whistle.

"Also I thought I was onside and wanted to put it in the back of the net, and that's what I went to do.

"It was difficult to get my head right after that because I'm not going to be taking part in the next game. But obviously the main thing was to play your part for the team and make sure you give it your best shot. Hopefully we get the right result in Ukraine."
