Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez is in jail for murder after a stunning turn of events over the summer and as the NFL regular season is about to begin, a Rolling Stone story offers up some details about Hernandez and his past, including drug use and hanging out with "gangsters."
The story is titled "The Gangster in the Huddle" and is an investigative report into Hernandez and his past as well as the events that led up to the murder of Lloyd. Hernandez was arrested the week after Lloyd's body was found and he is being held without bail on first degree murder charges in the Bristol County House of Correction while he awaits trial. Hernandez was in court last week for a probable cause hearing and he will be arraigned in superior court on Friday.
According to Rolling Stone, Hernandez had been living quite the hardcore lifestyle in recent years, spending more time with "gangsters" rather than family or even his teammates. When the murder story broke, more details started to come out about Hernandez's past, including while he was at Florida and failed drug tests, got into a bar fight and with a shooting. The Rolling Stone story alleges that Florida head coach Urban Meyer "may" have helped cover up drug tests for the tight end while also helping out with the fight and the shooting incident.
The story also alleges that Hernandez was a "heavy" user of angel dust in recent time and was very paranoid, which is why he wanted to carry guns all the time. Rolling Stone writes that his mother cheated on his father Dennis and Terri, his mother, married Jeffrey Cummings, a drug dealer and the man she cheated with. It says that both of Hernandez's parents had criminal records and also that he was getting close to being cut after falling on Bill Belichick's bad side by missing practices.
