Nicolas Anelka's future has been thrown into doubt after the striker walked out of West Brom following the death of his agent.

Anelka, who signed for the Baggies on a one-year deal this summer, has been granted indefinite compassionate leave by West Brom but is reportedly considering his future as a player.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea forward is torn up after the death of his agent Eric Manasse earlier this week.

According to reports, Anelka cleaned out his locker and informed West Brom of his decision to leave, and retire from the sport.

Anelka informed West Brom sporting and technical director Richard Garlick of his decision to quit the game, with the latter then trying his best to persuade the Frenchman to reverse his decision.

The 34-year-old expressed his grief at the loss of his agent on his official Facebook page.

"It is with great sadness that I just learned the death of Mr Eric Manasse," he wrote. "Upset by the news of mourning which strikes his family and relatives, Eric will leave a great void in our lives.

"I can't find the words to express my immense sorrow, and I wanted to bring all my condolences to family Manasse after this tragic loss."

West Brom confirmed Anelka would miss this weekend's English Premier League game against Everton.

"West Bromwich Albion can confirm that Nicolas Anelka will not be involved in Saturday's game at Everton," the club said in a statement on their official website.

"The club have excused the striker from club duty on compassionate grounds."

Anelka looked in great form in preseason, scoring seven goals, with West Brom manager Steve Clarke tipping the former French international to hit great heights in the Premier League yet again.
