Manchester United are ready to sell Wayne Rooney to their title rivals Chelsea, but only after they bring in a replacement.

Chelsea have been chasing Rooney all summer, with Jose Mourinho extremely keen on landing the England international.

The Europa League champions have seen two bids already turned down by United, who have vehemently said Rooney is not for sale.

However, according to a report in the Daily Mirror, Mourinho has been told United are prepared to let go of Rooney, as long as David Moyes is able to replace him properly.

Moyes is desperate to land an attacking midfielder capable of playing behind Robin Van Persie, the position initially earmarked for Rooney.

Rooney, however, is keen to play as a lone striker and is not happy about the fact that he is only second choice to Robin Van Persie.

The report suggests, Moyes has become frustrated with the Rooney transfer saga and is prepared to let the player go.

However, much will depend on the transfer ins at Old Trafford and with Moyes so far left frustrated in his attempts to being in a goalscoring midfielder, it remains to be seen if United will be able to land their preferred targets before the transfer window shuts on September 2.

Moyes has already failed in a double bid for Everton pair Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini, while a deal for Real Madrid playmaker Luka Modric is looking increasingly unlikely with the injury suffered by Xabi Alonso.

Mourinho said Chelsea are ready to make a new bid for Rooney, but will make the offer only after their English Premier League clash with United on Monday.

"I don't want Chelsea to do it before we go there," Mourinho said, following Chelsea's 2-1 win over Aston Villa on Wednesday.

"Everybody in the club, in the board, they agree with me. They share that opinion.

"I think this period, by the ethical point of view, is a period where we're going to be quiet.

"We have a plan B and a plan C (if we don't get Rooney)! Don't ask me names, because it's difficult to speak about players from other clubs."
