Chelsea are prepared to make their second bid of around £40 million for Manchester United's Wayne Rooney, after United have already turned down a bid of £30m for the 27-year-old striker.

New United boss David Moyes has insisted since succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson last month that Rooney is not for sale - and has rejected bids from Chelsea and Arsenal. But Rooney - and his team-mates - believe that his time at United has come to an end nine years after arriving from Everton in a £25million deal.

Rooney has made it clear that he wants to be played consistently in his preferred position and sources say Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho would provide a guarantee that Rooney gets what he wants.

A dressing-room source said: "It is now clear that Wayne has made up his mind about leaving United.

"It has nothing to do with David Moyes. He simply feels that he needs a new challenge.

"The talk around the club has been that he will officially ask for a transfer in the next week."

Meanwhile, United's pursuit of Cesc Fabregas could also come to a head this week. Barcelona are understood to have told Fabregas to state publicly that he wants to stay at the Nou Camp, while the club's director of football Andoni Zubizarreta claimed last night that United now accept he will not be sold.
