It will be Novak Djokovic (1) vs. Juan Martin Del Potro (8) in the Men's Singles Semifinals at 2013 Wimbledon. Surprisingly, this is the only match in both Men's and Women's Singles that will feature two Top 10 seeded players meeting in the semis. The question has to be asked, does Del Potro have what it takes to eliminate and upset the World's No. 1 ranked player in Men's Singles?
History would quickly disagree. Djokovic owns the head-to-head series against Del Potro, winning 8 of 1 matches played. However, there are some factors favoring Del Potro, as history also favors the Argentinian heading into Friday's semis.
Del Potro seems to play great tennis at Wimbledon. Okay, so history may not agree with that statement entirely. This is Del Potro's first ever semifinal appearances at Wimbledon, he had never made it out of the fourth round in his previous five tries at the All English Club. However, as of late, Del Potro has shown how great he could be. He won the bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics and is now creating havoc in the draw having eliminated the No. 4 seeded David Ferrer in their quarterfinal matchup.
Del Potro was supposed to be receiving treatment for a second hyperextended left knee. However, a second tumble in back-to-back matches didn't prevent the Argentinian from continuing his match against Ferrer. It looked as though Del Potro was ready to give in. However, Del Potro had Ferrer bow out of the tournament after three sets.
Also, not favoring Djokovic is the fact that Del Potro beat him recently, at Indian Wells, just a few months ago. Ironically, the victory for Del Potro came in the semifinals of that tournament. Will that be an omen for this upcoming match?
Djokovic has faced tougher opponents. He's always crossed paths with guys like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, who are the most successful active tennis players in Men's Singles. Djokovic has never lost to Del Potro in a grand slam title and he will look to improve that record to 4-0 after Friday.
Only one will remain standing as the Men's Singles Finals will take place Sunday, closing out singles tournament at 2013 Wimbledon.
