Wednesday was filled with a ton of dramatic tennis as the Men's Singles quarterfinals at Wimbledon saw the competition diminish from a group of eight to just four players. Who are they? Who faces who? Here's a look at the Men's Singles bracket as the semifinals is just a few days away.
The good news for Wimbledon is that the top two players are still alive in Men's Singles. Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray both advanced to the semifinals after their well played quarterfinal matches.
Novak Djokovic (1) vs. Juan Martin del Potro (8)
Who knows? Del Potro might have played ill as he hyper-extended his left knee once again before the first game was over in the opening set.
In the end, it didn't matter.
Del Potro finished the first set in strong fashion against David Ferrer (4). Del Potro has a towering figure, which makes his serve extremely dangerous. His forehand, when working, is extremely difficult to handle. Ferrer got a first-hand experience as he got a hefty dose of forehands and simply had no reply for the Argentinian's shots. Del Potro won the match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, 7(7)-6(5)
Djokovic defeated Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals in straight sets as well, 7(7)-6(5), 6-4, 6-3. The score describes exactly what Djokovic experienced on the court as Berdych came out aggresively to challenge Djokovic early on in the match. However, Djokovic seemed to slowly exhaust the Czech, going on unstoppable runs to win the match.
Del Potro will be eyeing his first Wimbledon finals appearance, whereas Djokovic will attempt to make his second finals appearance and capture his second Wimbledon title.
Andy Murray (2) vs. Jerzy Janowicz (24)
As Murray strugged against the Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco, Janowicz was completing a very emotional match against his fellow countryman, Lukasz Kubot. The two Polish players hugged numerous times at the net after the conclusion of their match. Janowicz was victorious, winning the match in straight sets, 7-5. 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals matchup.
Murray has to bring his A-Game to the semifinals. If he had trouble with some of Verdasco's serves, he has to make sure that is not the case against Janowicz, because Murray will find himself out of the tournament if he can't defend against Janowicz's serve. Janowicz finished his quarterfinals match against Kubot with 30 aces. That's one dominant way to win a match.
Murray is the only player in the semifinals who didn't win in straight sets. As a matter of fact, many probably thought Murray wasn't going to come back from two sets to love against Verdasco. Murray, however, rose to the occasion and rallied to win the final three sets. The final score at centre court after a 3 hour, 27 minute match was 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 in favor of the Scot.
