Kirk Cousins is a hot commodity right now. After a career-high game in Week 10 the quarterback is answering a lot of questions about his future. Cousins is in the final year of is rookie contract and can certainly earn himself a nice pay raise in the offseason. According to Cousins, he is not thinking about contracts or the future and is merely focused on repeating the success gained against the New Orleans Saints.
Cousins is getting a lot of questions about his future since the Redskins also have Robert Griffin III on the roster. Given how much salary cap space his contract is taking up, Cousins is in a tight spot. Naturally it is a question on everyone's mind and the quarterback has no plans on entertaining the idea heading into Week 11.
"I really don't deal with it," Cousins said, via Liz Clarke of the Washington Post. "Just try to focus on playing the game. I've got enough to worry about with Carolina and every team after that. That consumes my focus. I appreciate the question, but I feel like it's best for me to just focus on week-to-week and understanding that in this league, things change and happen so fast. I've gotten myself in trouble when I start to think and look down the road and predict things, so I try to take it one week at a time one day at a time. I've learned to handle it that way."
Cousins is right not to look ahead since he is facing Carolina in Week 11 who is undefeated. If the quarterback can repeat the career day against the Saints, the contract questions will be flying in even more than they already are. Head coach Jay Gruden made it clear that they want to keep Cousins around for the long-term, but doing so will be tough considering Griffin's contract and his fifth-year option that was picked up. According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, the Redskins have gotten no interest in trades for Griffin which means they will have to get creative in retaining Cousins.
The Washington Post reports that Griffin is not the only player with his future in question. Alfred Morris is in a contract year and has yet to capitalize off it. With Matt Jones impressing with a cheaper contract, Morris could be on the outside looking in. DeSean Jackson could be faced with the same fate as Jamison Crowder and Jordan Reed improve. A trade for Jackson could get the Redskins some solid draft picks to build elsewhere while also freeing up cap space to sign Cousins. The Redskins will have their hands full if the quarterback continues to improve.
