MLB Playoffs Standings and World Series Results: Kansas City Royals Win Over New York Mets 5-4, Lead 1-0 Into Game 2

The World Series started on Tuesday night and Game 1 went to the Kansas City Royals over the New York Mets 5-4 after a sacrifice fly from Eric Hosmer in the bottom of the 14th inning off of Bartolo Colon.

The game lasted five hours and now both teams will be looking to get some sleep into Game 2. The game extended into the 14th inning after some strong pitching from Chris Young and the game was played into the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The game started off with a wild play in the bottom of the first inning, as Alcides Escobar hit an inside the park home run off of Matt Harvey. The ball was misplayed by Yoenis Cespedes and that allowed Escobar to score easily to open the game. The Mets were able to score in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1 and both Harvey and Edinson Volquez pitched well through the early part of the game.

Curtis Granderson hit a homerun off of Volquez to give the Mets a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth and later in the sixth, Michael Conforto hit a sac fly that scored Cespedes. The Royals cut into the lead with a sac fly from Eric Hosmer that scored Ben Zobrist and later the team added another run with Lorenzo Cain scoring. The Mets scored in the top of the eighth inning after an error by Hosmer and that allowed Juan Lagares to score.

The Mets held a 4-3 lead in the ninth inning and the team has Jeurys Familia on the mound and he had not allowed a run in the playoffs. Familia allowed a home run to Alex Gordon and that tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. The game continued to go through extra innings after that and the home run stunned the Mets and now both teams will be tired heading into Game 2.

Harvey pitched six innings for the Mets and has two strikeouts, while Addison Reed went one inning and Tyler Clippard came in for a couple batters. Familia went 1.1 innings for the Mets, while Jonathon Niese and Bartolo Colon also came in. The Royals had Volquez start, while Danny Duffy, Kelvin Herrera, Luke Hochevar and Wade Davis also pitched along with Ryan Madson and Chris Young.
