Miami Hurricanes News: Al Golden Fired As Head Coach After Clemson Blowout 58-0, Larry Scott Takes Over

The Miami Hurricanes have fired head coach Al Golden following the 58-0 loss to Clemson on Saturday, which was the worst defeat in school history. ESPN reports that tight ends coach and run game coordinator Larry Scott will be the interim head coach after Golden was let go.

Miami athletic director athletic director Blake James announced the news on Sunday and he said that Scott will take over on an interim basis. Scott said that "we weren't where I thought we needed to be as a program" and that is why he made the decision on Golden. Golden won 32 games during his time as head coach for the Hurricanes and he went 17-18 in the ACC.

Miami fell to 4-3 with the loss and the team came into the season after going just 6-7 last year and there was pressure on Golden to turn things around. Golden did himself no favors by not being able to beat Florida State in five tries and the team did not perform well against top competition, going just 3-11 against teams in the AP Top 25 rankings.

Golden took over as Miami was dealing with bowl bans for NCAA violations and the team eventually went to two bowl games under Golden, but lost both times. Miami has not finished in the top 25 in the last five seasons and the way things have gone this year, it looks like that streak will run to six.

CBS Sports names a number of coaches and candidates for the job opening, including Greg Schiano, Rob Chudzinski, Butch Davis and James Franklin. The list from CBS also has Matt Wells, Rich Rodriguez, Scott Frost, Mark Stoops and Doug Meachem as potential options.

"Coach Golden has led our program through some very difficult times and he has done so with class, integrity and a true desire to see our students succeed on the field, in the classroom and in the community," the school said in a release. "However, we have a proud tradition of excellence at Miami, not just in football but in all sports, and we want to compete for ACC and national championships. I simply believe that now is the time to bring the Hurricane Family together and rally behind our young men."
