Los Angeles Angels Trade Rumors: Vernon Wells on the Move?

Nov 01, 2012 01:22 PM EDT

With the baseball season's conclusion, MLB's offseason trades and signings are in full effect and the Los Angeles Angels will look to continue making splashes in the market. More recently, rumors have spread of their interest in trading Vernon Wells.

Wells, the former centerfielder for the Toronto Blue Jays, the team that drafted him, was traded to the Angels back in 2011.

The Blue Jays accomplished a great feat unloading Wells' huge contract from their payroll after committing the error of giving him a 7-year, $126 million contract.

Ever since acquiring Wells the Angels have been paying $21 million for a 20-homer, 60 RBI hitter that hits in the low .200's.

Last season, Vernon Wells only played 77 games giving the team only 262 plate appearances. He had 11 home runs and 29 RBI with three stolen bases and a .230 batting average.

He is getting old and his production is suffering.

There is no doubt that Wells was one of the dominant players in the majors back in the mid-2000's, but those days are long gone.

He was a feared hitter as well as a feared defender who once patrolled the outfields of Toronto.  Wells was rewarded with a silver slugger, two All-Star appearances and three Rawlings Gold Glove Awards.

Wells made an All-Star appearance in 2010 after hitting 31 homers and driving in 88 runs.

No real suitors have been found yet, but if unloaded from their roster, the Angels will have to include some money in the deal with Wells.
