The Dallas Cowboys may have Jason Witten out in Week 3 with multiple injuries and if he can't play, Gavin Escobar could get the start and is a solid fantasy football option. The Cowboys just traded for Matt Cassel after the injury to Tony Romo, but Brandon Weeden likely will remain the starter for Week 3.

The Cowboys could be without three of their best players in Week 3, as the team is without Tony Romo and Dez Bryant already and now Witten could be out. Romo is on short term IR and Bryant could be out for another two months and according to ESPN.com, Witten is "not certain" that he will be able to play against the Falcons on Sunday. Witten has not missed a game since his rookie season and Ed Werder reports that Witten is considered "day-to-day" and could be a game time decision.

Werder reports that sources said that Witten is "not a lock to play at this point" and if he misses the game, Escobar likely would get the start. Witten is reportedly dealing with two sprained ankles and a knee issue coming out of the win against the Eagles last week. According to the Dallas Morning News, Witten said that he is "confident" that he will be able to play, but Werder's sources did not sound so optimistic.

Witten has played in 133 straight games for the Cowboys and Witten has not missed a game in years, even when he ruptured his spleen before the season opener in 2012. Witten has been as consistent as any tight end or any player in the NFL over the last decade and losing him will put a lot of pressure on receivers like Cole Beasley and Terrance Williams as well as Escobar. Those players are already feeling the heat without Bryant active and if Witten is out, the defense can lock onto those players to force Brandon Weeden into some tough situations.

Escobar has the size and skills to be a solid replacement tight end, but he does not have much experience, making just nine catches in each of the last two seasons. Escobar has four catches for 24 yards and one touchdown in two games this season.
