Week 7 of the NFL season saw numerous exciting games, including a shootout between the Buffalo Bills and the Tennessee Titans and a nail-biter for the Washington Redskins and the New York Giants.
The New England Patriots and Oakland Raiders needed overtime to earn their wins, while the Pittsburgh Steelers gutted out an AFC North win against the Cincinnati Bengals. But across the league teams suffered a range of injuries, including the Jacksonville Jaguars, who lost their starting quarterback and running back in their game against the Raiders.
Gabbert was hurt in the second quarter of the game after getting hit on his non-throwing shoulder. He was replaced by Chad Henne and had played well to that point, hitting on 8 of 12 passes for 110 yards before the injury. He had one touchdown as well, a 42-yard touchdown pass to Cecil Shorts III.
"I tried to do something after it happened but it was hindering me a little bit,'' Gabbert said to the Associated Press. "At the end of the day, I didn't want to hurt the team.''
Coach Mike Mularkey said, "I don't know the exact extent, but painful enough that he could not stay in there. He tried. I appreciate his effort. He's a tough guy, but I think it would have not been smart for us to do that with him [put him back in the lineup].''
Starting running back Maurice Jones-Drew was hurt on his first carry of the game and was taken off the fird after his second snap. He hurt his foot on the play and went back to the locker room before coming back to the sideline in a boot and crutches.
"It was a routine tackle. I just got rolled,'' Jones said to Jacksonville.com. "I just didn't feel right. I didn't want to go out there and hurt our team.
Jones-Drew is the Jaguars leading rusher with 412 yards on the season. Backup Rashad Jennings came into the game and gained 44 yards and scored a touchdown.
The Jaguars were lost without their two biggest starters, squandering a 14-point lead to lose the game 26-23 in overtime. The team fell to 1-5, but should have Gabbert back for next week's game against the Green Bay Packers according to head coach Mike Mularkey.
At his press conference on Monday, the coach announced that Jones-Drew will miss the game but that there was a "good chance" Gabbert would play.
The Redskins lost starting tight end Fred Davis to a season-long injury against the Giants on Sunday and may be without a defensive leader for next week's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Linebacker London Fletcher hurt his hamstring in the game and will have an MRI on Monday according to Chris Russell of 980 ESPN. Fletcher has been one of Washington's most reliable starters during his career, making 186 consecutive starts and playing in 231 consecutive games.
The Dallas Cowboys suffered yet another injury to their running game on Sunday when Felix Jones went down with a bruised knee in the teams win against the Carolina Panthers.
The Cowboys had already lost starting running back DeMarco Murray to a foot injury the week before and are set to play the New York Giants in Week 8. Jones had rushed for 44 yards before leaving the game and third-stringer Phillip Tanner took over for the final portion of the game.
