Houston Texans News: Brian Hoyer Names Starter Over Ryan Mallett, Bill O’Brien Ends QB Competition In Preseason?

Aug 24, 2015 12:18 PM EDT

The Texans have finally ended this fierce quarterback competition between Ryan Mallet and Brian Hoyer.

Hoyer has won the starting job as he has gone 9/15 for 119 yards and a touchdown in his preseason appearances. Mallet fell flat as he started for the Texans for their 2nd preseason contest. Mallet went 5/7 for 23 yards in his time as a starter. In preseason week 1 when coming into relieve Brian Hoyer who got the start, Mallet went 10/11 for 90 yards and a carry that netted 3 yards. Hoyer has been the only quarterback to see the end zone in the battle and for that reason head coach Bill O'Brien saw Hoyer as the better fit offensively.

Hoyer has a lot of veteran ball skills and can challenges secondary's by throwing a pretty accurate deep ball especially if it is too DeAndre Hopkins.

The Texans want to maximize the most out of the offensive weapons they have brought in and now with Arian Foster sidelined for most of the season the Texans will have to throw the ball a lot more. With players like Nate Washington, Cecil Shorts, and Jaelen Strong who have been added in the offseason the Texans passing game has not looked scarier.

Shorts has come on as a training camp MVP making play after play in the offseason. 3rd round pick Jaelen Strong has struggled with drops but is finally coming along after a hard first half of the preseason.
