Arizona Cardinals News: Jen Welter Hired As First Female NFL Coach, Will Work For Bruce Arians In Training Camp

Jul 28, 2015 02:29 PM EDT

Bruce Arians has made history by hiring the first ever female coach in the NFL. Jen Welter will be the Cardinal's coach for inside linebackers.

She will be one of 7 coaching interns the Cardinals will work with this summer. Welter has extensive football experience playing for the Women's Football Alliance's Dallas Diamonds; and as a running back for the Indoor Football League's Texas Revolution. She has over 14 years of football experience and a master's degree in sports psychology and a PhD in psychology, so it will be interesting to see if she can motivate Cardinals players by using her psychology and analytical skills.

Now it appears that this will be the first of many opportunities that Welter will have in the NFL especially if she can get the Cardinal's inside linebackers in order this year. She will be handling Kevin Minter, Sean Weatherspoon, Darryl Sharpton, and rookie Markus Golden.

When these summer internships end it will be beneficial to both parties as both can take something away from each other. This is not Welter's first foray into coaching men's professional sports either, just last year she was an assistant coach for the Texas Revolution apart of the IFL (Indoor Football League). This has been a year of firsts as the first female official, Sarah Thomas, was brought in by the NFL and will be in action as the season begins.
