When the Los Angeles Lakers began making moves in free agency, general manager Mitch Kupchak made it clear he was not looking to build around Kobe Bryant in the coming season. Bryant has been the face of the franchise of the Lakers since his arrival, but with the potential of retirement on the horizon, the Lakers have been looking to build a new set of stars, something easier said than done. With second Plan B options now signed, is Bryant getting to work with his new teammates?
While being introduced to the media after officially signing their contracts, Roy Hibbert, Brandon Bass and Lou Williams were asked if they have spoken with Bryant in regards to the upcoming season. According to Baxter Holmes of ESPN.com, all three said no. Outside of contributing to free agent interviews with DeAndre Jordan and LaMarcus Aldridge, Bryant has been extremely quiet this offseason. While he is secured for the upcoming season to the tune of $25 million, making him the highest paid player in the league, Bryant is very clearly on the outs of the franchise.
Bryant was hoping to go out on top in what might be his final season in the NBA, but there are definite questions as to whether the Lakers roster is built for that. The team appeared unimpressive during summer league play, getting booed several times during the Las Vegas tournament which is a big concern considering a number of those players are expected to play big roles next season.
According to the Orange County Register, the Lakers are expected to bring in Steve Nash for offseason workouts with both D'Angelo Russell and Jordan Clarkson who are taking over the position in 2015. Head coach Byron Scott confirmed there would be a starting battle between the two young stars as they look to create a dynamic backcourt for Bryant.
The point guard spot will not be the only position battle taking place. Julius Randle and Bass are expected to compete for a starting spot. Randle is coming off a year-long injury while only playing a handful of minutes in summer league play. Meanwhile, Bass is coming off a solid year with the Boston Celtics and could beat out the young player if Randle struggles. The clear leader for the team might end up being Hibbert who was traded after the Lakers missed on Aldridge and Jordan. Bryant has yet to speak on his new teammates, but is likely aware the roster has their work cut out for them.
