The Dallas Cowboys are hopeful they have the same productive offense as last season as dreams of a Super Bowl continue to dance around in Jerry Jones' head. The offensive line has certainly improved, but question marks remain around the depth of the offensive playmakers. Getting Dez Bryant back was a big step in the right direction, but losing DeMarco Murray might hurt worse than Jones is willing to believe. Could the Cowboys still eye offensive pieces to add to the roster before training camp?
With Bryant returning, one of the players that really gets a boost is Terrance Williams who is expected to play a much larger role with the Cowboys this season. Returning as the second-leading receiver, Williams has been playing in the shadows of Bryant and is aiming for a breakout year.
"He's not only taken a tremendous leadership role in the group, really setting the example of how you do things, he's expanded his route inventory," wide receivers coach Derek Dooley said, via ESPNDallas.com. "He's played X. He's played Z. He's played in the slot and every day he went out there and was the same player. Every route, every opportunity he had he took advantage of it. So he's made a big jump this offseason."
There has been some doubt that Williams is a viable option as a strong No.2 option for Tony Romo. The depth behind him is also questionable with Cole Beasley and Devin Street headlining the group. Could the Cowboys make a quick addition to the rotation? According to Mike Wells of ESPN.com, Reggie Wayne is garnering some interest on the free agent market as he aims to play one more season in the league. The Cowboys would be wise to take a look as it would be a low-risk, high-reward situation. Adding Wayne would give the huddle a solid veteran voice while the receiver can still be a solid threat if heathly.
The same can be said for the running back rotation. The Cowboys are giving Darren McFadden a third chance to excel in the league while placing faith in the progress of Joseph Randle and Lance Dunbar. Team vice president Stephen Jones told the Dallas Morning News that the Cowboys have a short-list of veteran options they will call if the need presents itself. Steven Jackson, Felix Jones and Chris Johnson are all available and likely willing to accept smaller contracts. If the Cowboys sign a running back they will likely not sign a wide receiver and vice versa, but Jones made it clear that the option is certainly there.
