Colorado Rockies star Troy Tulowitzki could ask the team for a trade this season after a bad start to the year, as the New York Post reports that the shortstop will meet with agent this week to discuss hit suture and if a deal happens, Joel Sherman writes that the San Diego Padres, NY Mets, Seattle Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees could be interested.
Tulowitzki has been mentioned in trade rumors over the past couple years and with the Rockies looking like they are rebuilding, a trade could be a possibility. According to the New York Post, Tulowitzki will be meeting with his agent this week and the two are expected to talk about the possibility of asking the Rockies for a trade.
Tulowitzki has over $100 million left on his contract and he is already 30 years old with a six year deal. According to FOX Sports reporter Ken Rosenthal, the Rockies are not currently "ready to talk" about a trade and that the team is planning on looking for pitching on the market before making moves. Even if Tulowitzki requests a trade, the Rockies may wait until closer to the trade deadline and there is a chance the team turns things around by then.
That outcome is not looking likely and Joel Sherman reports that Tulowitzki and his agent may decide to ask the Rockies for a trade this season. Tulowitzki is signed to a six year contract with $118 million left on it and next season he is set to make $20 million. Tulowitzki will make that salary each season until 2020 when he will be paid $14 million, which is followed by a club option year.
Sherman writes that the Mariners, Pirates, Padres and Mets could potentially look at a deal, while the Yankees likely will not go after Tulowitzki due to the size of his contract. The Mets were mentioned as a landing spot for Tulowitzki last year, but the team never came close to pulling off a trade. The Mariners could be a fit, as they have Brad Miller and Chris Taylor battling at shortstop and they could move one of those players in a deal for Tulowitzki.
This season Tulowitzki is off to a solid start, hitting .307 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 28 games played. The Yankees would love to make the deal and they have had interest in Tulowitzki in the past, but they simply do not want to spend the money on the shortstop at this time. Tulowitzki is one of the best shortstops in the game, but his injury history and contract make him tough to trade and that could force the Rockies to consider some other options, including picking up money on the deal to get better prospects.
The team also does not want to deplete the farm system after finally adding some solid prospects and in all honest, the farm system is not strong enough for the Rockies to make the deal with the Yankees anyway. The Yankees are also wary of adding an expensive shortstop with injury issues and Tulowitzki has that in his past.
