Sep 16, 2012 12:42 AM EDT

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Sergio Martinez's match for the WBC Middleweight Champions went down to the wire but Martinez defeated Chavez Jr. by unanimous decision by the score of 117-110, 118-109, 118-109  and retained the belt that belonged to him before.

Martinez was in control throughout the fight until the final round where Chavez Jr. knocked out the Argentinian. Martinez went down, but got back up. Chavez Jr. went after him, but Martinez would retaliate.

Martinez slipped, which burned some time off the clock. Chavez Jr. could not get back to work as Martinez got to land a few punches on Chavez Jr.

Martinez then held on in the closing seconds of the final round to hold on for the victory.

Chavez Jr. knew he needed a knockout and he tried his best to repeat history as 22 years ago his father, Mexican boxing legend, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. won a fight against Meldrick Taylor, knocking the fighter out with just two seconds left in the final round. Chavez Sr. was set to lose the fight if it had been based on the scoring cards. He needed the knockout and he got it.

Before the conclusion of the fight, Freddie Roach, Chavez Jr.'s trainer, said he would need a knockout and he came very close to accomplishing the feat and repeating history.

Everybody will expect a rematch now. Chavez Jr. knows he can take Martinez's punches and knows he can knockout the current Middleweight champion. The question on everybody's mind is, can Chavez Jr. finish Martinez off.

Martinez said after the fight that the title returned to a fighter that will be willing to fight everyone. He also said that he is willing to give Chavez Jr. a rematch. He said Chavez Jr. fought well despite losing.

With the win, he hopes fans will believe again in boxing as Michael Buffer said this was one of the most dramatic finishes in the history of boxing.
