Buffalo Bills Rumors: Bryce Petty, Garrett Grayson, Brett Hundley Draft Options Over Kirk Cousins Trade, EJ Manuel After Matt Cassel?

Apr 02, 2015 03:32 PM EDT

The Buffalo Bills pulled off trades for LeSean McCoy and Matt Cassel this offseason and heading into the draft, GM Doug Whaley could look at adding another QB to the mix with EJ Manuel, as names like Bryce Petty, Garrett Grayson, Brett Hundley, Shane Carden and Taylor Kelly could be potential targets at quarterback over making trades for Mike Glennon or Kirk Cousins.

The Bills have made a number of upgrades on offense with McCoy and Charles Clay coming in, but many have speculated the team could do more at quarterback. According to Mike Rodak at ESPN, Cassel is the presumed starter over EJ Manuel for Rex Ryan, but there is a chance the team could look at the draft or the trade market for other options. Jay Cutler and Philip Rivers have come up in rumors, but it appears that both players are staying put, while Kirk Cousins, Matt Barkley and Mike Glennon have reportedly been shopped in trades.

According to Pro Football Talk, the Bills may take a look at quarterbacks in the draft, but it's likely they will go after some of the lower level names over Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota. PFT writes that GM Doug Whaley said that there is a lot of talent in the quarterback class this year and there could be starters in the middle rounds and on the second and third days of the draft.

Last year the Bills traded their first round pick for 2015 to get Sammy Watkins and that is one reason why the team is not going to go big by trying to trade back into the first round. They have already made significant upgrades and Whaley thinks that he can find talent in the later rounds. PFT name checks Bryce Petty, Garrett Grayson and Brett Hundley as options and other names like Shane Carden and Sean Mannion also could be available on the second day of the draft.

According to BuffaloBills.com, Ryan said that the team will have an "open competition" for the starting job and right now Manuel, Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor are in the mix. The team could add another quarterback to that, but Whaley likely would make that draft pick with eyes on 2016 and beyond for that player. Cassel is a bridge option at best and if Manuel isn't the guy that Doug Marrone thought he was, Whaley will need another backup option to try and make into a consistent starter.

Bryce Petty is coming out of Baylor after putting up some great numbers and he has been getting attention from teams, including the Dolphins and the Cowboys. Petty could be the first QB off the board past Winston and Mariota. Hundley is also an intriguing option and Adam Schefter on Twitter reports that many scouts see Hundley as a sleeper option in the draft.

Hundley could have come out of school last year and been a top pick, but he stayed in and now he is expected to drop and the Bills could target him as an option over Manuel moving forward. Grayson has also started to receive a bit more attention in the weeks heading into the draft.
