Miami Dolphins 2012: Ryan Tannehill to Start Preseason Game Against Carolina Panthers

Aug 17, 2012 09:44 AM EDT

After a strong NFL debut for the Miami Dolphins last week, Ryan Tannehill is getting another opportunity to show his stuff on Friday night, as the rookie out of Texas A&M will start Friday night's preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.

The news broke Friday morning on Miami sports radio station 790 AM The Ticket, and was quickly spread via Twitter, with Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post (@BenVolinPBP), and ESPN insider Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) echoing Dick Stockton's report on the radio.

With David Garrard out with a knee injury, Matt Moore started for the Dolphins in last week's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, completing 7 of 12 passes for 79 yards and an interception. Tannehill, the eight overall pick in this year's NFL Draft, completed 14 of 21 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown, Miami's only score of the night in a 20-7 loss.

That performance has earned Tannehill the opportunity to see what he can do against the Panthers' starting defense. With another strong performance, Tannehill could find himself on track to become Miami's opening day starter against the Texans on September 9.

In his senior year at Texas A&M, Tannehill completed 327 of 531 passes for 3744 yards and 29 touchdowns with 15 interceptions. That helped make him the third quarterback taken in the draft in April, after top picks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III. Both Luck and Griffin are on track to start the season under center for the Colts and Redskins, respectively. Is Tannehill on his way to joining them?
