Olympics 2012 Water Polo Live Stream: Watch USA vs. Spain for Gold Medal

Aug 09, 2012 02:42 PM EDT

When the United States and Spain faced off during group play in the 2012 Summer Olympics women's water polo tournament, the two nations could not decide a winner.

That won't be the case on Thursday, as Spain and the U.S. will meet for the gold medal on Thursday at the Water Polo Arena. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m. local time (3 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time in the U.S.), and the match will follow the bronze medal match between Australia and Hungary.

The match will be broadcast live on NBC in the United States, and will be streamed live online at NBCOlympics.com and through the NBC Olympics Live Extra App on mobile devices.

The U.S. and Spain played to a 9-9 draw last Wednesday, with the Spaniards rallying from a 9-6 deficit to score three goals in the final 2:49 of play. Both teams finished group play at 2-0-1, but Spain earned the group's top seed based on goal differential. The U.S. advanced to the finals with wins over Italy and pre-Games favorite Australia, while Spain defeated host Great Britain and upstart Hungary to reach the gold medal match.

Anni Espar Llaquet leads Spain with 13 goals in the tournament, while Maggie Steffens leads the U.S. team with 16, second only to Italy's Tania Di Mario at these Olympic Games. Each player scored once apiece in the teams' first meeting.

The United States has won a medal at every Olympics since women's water polo was added to the program in 2000, but has never won gold, capturing silver in 2000 and 2008 and bronze in 2004. Spain has guaranteed its first-ever Olympic medal in women's water polo by advancing to the final.
