Olympics 2012 Women's Indoor Volleyball Results: Brazil Defeats Russia, Advance to Semifinals

The Women's Indoor Volleyball Team advanced into the semifinals after defeating Russia in five sets, 24-26, 25-22, 19-25, 22-25, 21-19. Sheilla Castro had 27 points, Thaisa Menezes finished with 24.

They managed to win the last two sets, escaping the match with a win.

This one started with a tight score. No team lead by mother than two points in the entire set. Brazil took its first lead after scoring four straight points making 10-8 in the first set. Brazil's lead disappeared after Russia went on a 11-8 run to take the 19-18 advantage.

Brazil regained the lead 23-22, but eventually lost the set as Russia score 4 of the last 5 points.

The second set was all Brazil dominated going on a 5-0 with the score 8-7 in their favor. The closest Russia got after that point was 19-17. Brazil scored two quick points making it 21-17. Russia scored 5-9 last points in the match, but Brazil took the set, tying the match at one.

Set three was close in the beginning with Brazil owning the lead in the first 22 games until Russia tied the game at 11 and turned the tables scoring five consecutive points for the 14-11 lead. They never trailed from this point on, taking the set 25-19.

Russia's third set victory carried into the fourth as they ran out in front with a 3-0 lead. Brazil kept close, not allowing Russia's lead to exceed three points. Brazil tied the game at nine and then took the 11-9 lead.

Russia answered back with two points of their own to ie the game at 11 and then took a 13-12 lead only to have it stripped by Brazil as they tied and scored making the set 14-14. 

Brazil took the 16-14 lead and did not relinquish the lead despite a few ties.

In the final set, Brazil dominated the start and there were no ties until the score was 13-13. After a couple of back and forths the game tied at 19. Fernanda Rodrigues served and Liubov Shashkova could not handle the ball. Fabiana Claudino clinched the victory with a spike that Svetiana Kryuchkova could not dig out. 

Brazil will now face Japan in the semifinals
