Boxing Rumors: Could Floyd Mayweather Fight Outside Las Vegas?

Aug 03, 2012 01:20 PM EDT

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is out of a Nevada prison after being released Friday morning, and the next time "Money" steps into the ring, he could be out of Nevada, period.

Bryan Armen Graham, who covers boxing and mixed martial arts for SI.com, posted Friday on his Twitter account (@BryanAGraham) that the undefeated WBC Welterweight Champion could take his next fight outside of Las Vegas as a means of striking back at the state of Nevada.

"The rumor is Floyd's next fight could be outside Vegas," Graham tweeted, "as to not reward the state that locked him up, but he hasn't spoken to media yet."

Mayweather has been in prison since June 1, serving an 87-day sentence for domestic abuse, which he was released early from on Friday. The start of Mayweather's sentence was delayed in order to facilitate his fight against Miguel Cotto on May 5, which Mayweather won by unanimous decision.

Mayweather hasn't fought outside Las Vegas since November 19, 2005, when he scored a TKO victory over Sharmba Mitchell at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon. At that time, Mayweather was still under contract with Bob Arum and Top Rank Promotions. Since then, Mayweather has fought eight times in Las Vegas, the last six at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

A move outside Vegas has been the subject of speculation in the past, specifically Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, where Manny Pacquiao fought against Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito in 2010. With the size of the stadium - a crowd of 50,994 watched Pacquiao defeat Clottey - the venue would be ideal for the long-awaited Pacquiao-Mayweather superfight, but besides the usual difficulties in arranging that fight, Pacquiao has other business to attend to after his controversial loss to Tim Bradley. In any event, a Mayweather fight in Dallas would likely be just as lucrative as Pacquiao's exploits there.

The question now is whether "Money" will, in fact, take his show on the road.
