Olympics 2012 Women’s Soccer: U.S. Defeats North Korea, 1-0, to Win Group G

Three games into their run at the 2012 Summer Olympics, the United States women's soccer is absolutely golden.

A goal from Abby Wambach was all the offense needed for head coach Pia Sundhage's team, as the Americans held North Korea to a single shot on goal in a 1-0 win at Old Trafford, the venerated home stadium of English Premier League club Manchester United.

The goal came in the 25th minute, as Wambach scored her third goal in as many games at these Olympics. Alex Morgan had the initial threat on goal, but with North Korean defenders closing in, she slid the ball over to an oncoming Wambach, who delivered a hard shot into the lower right corner of the net.

The U.S. maintained control of play throughout the match, finishing with 63 percent ball possession, but the North Korean side was able to keep the U.S. from doubling its lead for the next hour of play, but drew the first red card of the Olympics when Choe Mi Gyong was sent off after a hard foul on the U.S.'s Lauren Cheney. It was Choe's second yellow card of the match, producing the dismissal.

The U.S. could not add an insurance tally even with North Korea down to 10 players for the final five minutes, but no insurance was necessary, as the Americans completed their run in Group G with a 3-0-0 record. If Great Britain and Brazil tie later on Tuesday, the U.S. would be the only team in the competition with a perfect group record.
