The Washington Redskins may start Robert Griffin III on Sunday against the New York Giants in Week 15 if Colt McCoy isn't cleared following an injury, with head coach Jay Gruden saying that RG3 likely would be the first option over Kirk Cousins after McCoy injured his neck against the Rams.

The Redskins are in free fall and with Griffin on the bench the last two weeks the team has sputtered and now he could get the chance to start again. According to Pro Football Talk, Gruden said that the team will evaluate the film from Sunday and that if McCoy is cleared to play following his injury, he will be under center for the Redskins. Gruden has been looking to open up the offense with McCoy as the quarterback, but the game against the Rams was a mess on both sides, with McCoy getting sacked six times.

Griffin will be the starter on Sunday if McCoy can't go and that would put things in an interesting spot for Gruden, as he could watch RG3 bounce back after all the reports that have previously come out. Snyder and company also could be in a tough spot if Griffin comes back and continues to struggle, as it could set up a battle between Gruden, the QB and the front office. Gruden was just hired and while the team gave up a ton for RG3, getting rid of another coaching staff would be another major step back.

Reports have circulated that Gruden doesn't want to keep Griffin heading into next season, but it's likely that those decisions will not be made until after the regular season is over. Griffin has played in just six games this season after dealing with an injury and he has passed for 902 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Griffin has regressed since his rookie season when he threw for 20 touchdowns and just five interceptions and the Redskins have not been able to sustain the success they had in the 2012 season.

Griffin was great as a rookie and rushed for over 800 yards, but since then he has rushed for 600 yards over two seasons and that has taken away one of his best skills. The injuries have done that and so have the new offensive schemes and now the Redskins could be looking at moving on. RG3 has the tools to become a great quarterback, but so far it hasn't happened and if Gruden wants to build in Washington, he may look to do it without Griffin.

The Redskins were embarrassed last week with a 24-0 loss against the Rams and now they face off against the Giants and then the Eagles. The team is 3-10 this season and they have lost five games in a row since winning against the Dallas Cowboys. The team won those two games in a row before hitting this losing streak and now they have three divisional games to end the year and can play spoiler for Dallas and Philly.
