Robert Griffin III, Colt McCoy and Kirk Cousins all want to start for the Washington Redskins in Week 15 against the New York Giants. The only issue is that two of those options are not playing well while the third as a neck strain. Head coach Jay Gruden has another tough call to make in regards to the quarterback position as injuries and a struggling franchise star plague the position. Griffin told the media that he has every intention to start on Sunday, if not a trade might be necessary.
The chances McCoy plays on Sunday are slim. The quarterback took a hard shot in Week 14 and suffered a neck strain in the process. The quarterback told the media that he feels fine and should be good to go, but he was unclear exactly what his status was with the team this week in wake of the injury. McCoy did not exactly impress in the game against the St. Louis Rams. The Redskins failed to score a point in the shutout loss and McCoy was on the ground more times than not and also tossed two interceptions.
Griffin stepped in and went 3 of 4 for 33 yards and a sack. However, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Griffin will get the start should McCoy not be ready to play. According to the quarterback, he is ready to play and while he is not advocating for the starting job, he certainly wants to be on the field.
"I didn't know if I was going to get an opportunity," Griffin said, via the Washington Post. "It's not my focus. My focus is to help this team win all week, helping the defense and then being ready to play if I'm called upon. If he (Gruden) decides to put me in, I'm ready to go, but I am not going to undermine anybody else or be that player because that's not who I am."
Griffin is not pushing for changes within the team as trade rumors began to circulate around his name, but the quarterback wants to play and Washington might be ready to give up on him. According to Jason Reid of the Washington Post, Griffin's time in Washington was over the second they benched the quarterback for McCoy. The report states that the front office favors Gruden as head coach who "believes he needs a clean break from Griffin to focus on fixing Washington's 3-9 mess."
Teams will show interest in Griffin, but not at the price Washington will want. The quarterback might only be worth a mid-round pick at best at this point. However, it is looking more and more likely that Washington is ready to start fresh in 2015.
