Penn State Sanctions: Silas Redd Transfer Rumors Grow as USC Visit Continues

Jul 30, 2012 12:43 PM EDT

The transfer rumors surrounding Penn State running back Silas Redd and USC aren't growing any quieter.

Redd, who is considering a transfer from the embattled Nittany Lions program, pulled out of representing the school at last week's Big Ten media day in Chicago and met with USC head coach Lane Kiffin. Redd then visited the USC campus over the weekend, and according to report on Twitter from ESPN college football insider Joe Schad, the visit remains ongoing.

"Silas Redd arrived in California Saturday," Schad posted to his Twitter account (@schadjoe). "He is still there. The visit is - still - going well."

Redd, a 5-foot-10, 200-pound junior from Connecticut, was a second team Al-Big Ten selection last season after running for 1,241 yards and seven touchdowns. He was identified early on as a top transfer candidate from Penn State after the school was hit with massive sanctions that included a provision allowing any Nittany Lions player to transfer with immediate eligibility. He was quickly linked to USC, which will enter the 2012 season as the No. 1 team in the nation but has limited depth at running back behind Curtis McNeal. The addition of Redd could certainly shore up "Tailback U's" strength at its signature position and improve the Trojans' already significant chances at a national championship in 2012.

Penn State is scheduled to begin training camp next week under new head coach Bill O'Brien. The Nittany Lions face a four-year bowl game ban and loss of scholarships.
