Olympics 2012 Shooting Results: Kimberly Rhode Overwhelmed After Creating History

Jul 30, 2012 04:00 AM EDT

Kimberly Rhode became the first American to win five medals at an individual event in five consecutive Olympic Games, by triumphing in the women's skeet event.

She also broke the Olympic record with 74 hits in 75 in qualifying, and went on to equal her own world record by notching a perfect 25 in the final for a total of 99 at the Royal Artillery Barracks.

The 33-year-old is a two-time gold medallist in the double trap event, in Atlanta 1996 and Athens 2004, either side of bronze in Sydney 2000, and she won silver in the skeet at Beijing 2008.

Ning Wei of China finished second with bronze going to Slovakia's Danka Bartekova, after winning the shoot-out against Marina Belikova of Russia.

Rhode, despite the unprecedented success, said she is far from done, and sees herself on the top of the podium in four years time in Rio Di Janeiro. "'I do not see myself quitting any time soon,' Rhode said.

"I'm looking forward to 2016 and a few more after that. The oldest Olympic medallist was a shooter and he was 72, so I still have a few more in me.

"It's just been an incredible journey. And ultimately, I couldn't be happier for bringing home the gold for the United States.

"I don't think it's really sunk in yet, from the time I shot to present, it's just been a whirlwind of emotions. It's incredible. I'm just waiting for someone to pinch me.

"It's been an overwhelming experience. "Every emotion hits you at once."
