There is more at stake in this season's Egg Bowl than ever before. For just the third time in the past 57 years, both Mississippi State and Mississippi are ranked heading into this rivalry matchup. There is a lot to play for between the teams. The Bulldogs have a chance to get to the SEC championship game along with the college football playoffs. Mississippi is all but done in the race for both, but upsetting hte Bulldogs would be a solid way to end the season.
The Bulldogs took a hit when they fell to Alabama, knocking them down to fourth in the playoff rankings. They would need a win and the Crimson Tide to lose on Saturday to reach the championship game in Georgia and secure their spot in the playoffs. It will not be easy considering they have to go on the road to do so and in the history of the Egg Bowl, the home team has won the last nine of 10 games.
Ole Miss have fallen apart in the last few weeks of the season. The Rebels started hot, winning seven straight games, including a big win over Alabama. However, they lost to LSU, Auburn and then Arkansas in a 30-0 shutout to knock them out of contention for just anything other than a bowl game. The loss to the Razorbacks was the worst in the Rebels' recent history where they turned the ball over six times.
This will be a game of the quarterbacks. All eyes are on Bo Wallace who returns after spraining his ankle in the Arkansas loss. Wallace was looking like Heisman contender until those three SEC West losses. He will also be playing without his best wide receiver Laquon Treadwell who suffered a season-ending injury against Auburn.
Dak Prescott is looking to bounce back after throwing three interceptions against Alabama. He followed that up with three touchdowns against Vanderbilt. Prescott remains a contender for the Heisman, but he is facing a tough Ole Miss defense who is only allowing 13.5 points per game.
