Phillip Hughes Dies: Cricket Star Passes Away After Neck Injury From South Australia Sheffield Shield Australian cricket player Phillip Hughes has died after being struck in the neck with a ball during a match while playing for South Australia in Sydney.

Hughes, 25, was struck in the neck while lining up and after suffering the injury he was placed in an induced coma to help swelling in his brain. According to the BBC, Hughes had surgery but never regained consciousness and he suffered a split artery and had a "massive bleed" in his brain. Hughes had surgery to try and relieve pressure on his brain, but the procedure did not make that much of a difference and he passed away two days later.

The 25 year old had also played for Hampshire, Middlesex and Worcestershire and he was hit by bowler Sean Abbott. The ball was travelling 90 mph according to the Guardian and it hit Hughes in an unprotected part of his neck. Hughes was wearing a helmet.
