Penn State Transfer Rumors: Tight End Kevin Haplea Visiting Florida State

Jul 27, 2012 02:01 PM EDT

Names continue to emerge regarding possible transfers from Penn State's embattled football program, as multiple sources indicate that junior tight end Kevin Haplea is visiting Florida State.

Haplea, the Nittany Lions' most experienced tight end, made three catches for 21 yards and a touchdown in 2011 while playing in every game for Penn State. He also had three catches for 39 yards as a freshman. A native of Annandale, N.J., Haplea was ranked as the No. 6 tight end in the nation in the 2010 recruiting class. His twin sister, Gretchen, is also a student at Penn State.

The Seminoles are young at the tight end position after graduating Beau Reliford and Jabaris Little. Sophomore Nick O'Leary is Florida State's most experienced tight end, having caught 12 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown last year while playing in all 13 games for the Seminoles, who went 9-4 last season, culminating in an 18-14 win over Notre Dame in the Champs Sports Bowl. Redshirt sophomore Will Tye is the only other returning tight end for Florida State, while redshirt junior Dan Hicks will move over from defensive end.

Under the sanctions handed down on Monday by the NCAA - which include a four-year bowl game ban and loss of scholarships - any current Penn State player is allowed to transfer to another NCAA institution with immediate eligibility, a departure from the typical rule that requires transfer students to sit out a year before competing.
