Penn State Sanctions: Former PSU Star Paul Posluszny Says Joe Paterno Had Too Much Power

Jul 26, 2012 02:02 PM EDT

With his alma mater in the news for all the wrong reasons, former Penn State linebacker Paul Posluszny had a lot to say on the subject of the Nittany Lions on Thursday at Jacksonville Jaguars training camp.

Posluszny, preparing for his second season with the Jaguars after four years with the Buffalo Bills, made a number of comments to Jaguars beat writer Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union, who posted several to her Twitter account (@taniaganguli).

"Penn State Paul Posluszny disagrees the football culture needs to change at PSU, but agrees Paterno had too much power," Ganguli tweeted.

Posluszny finished his career at Penn State with a school-record 372 tackles and was a two-time winner of the Bednarik Award for best defensive player in the nation. He led Penn State to a Big Ten championship and an Orange Bowl title in his junior year, both of which were vacated by Monday's NCAA sanctions against the Penn State football program, along with every other win at Penn State from 1988 to 2011.

Posluszny is considered by some (including Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Ham) to be the best linebacker ever to play at Penn State, a significant distinction given the football program's "Linebacker U" moniker. The school's reputation for producing great linebackers was built under Jerry Sandusky, who coached the linebackers for nearly 30 years, the last 22 as defensive coordinator.

On the subject of Paterno's inaction on Sandusky's sexual abuse of children, Posluszny said, "The mistake that he made, it goes against everything that we were taught & everything that he preached to us."

The 27-year-old Posluszny made a career-high 192 tackles for the Jaguars last season. In 61 career NFL games, he has 602 tackles (429 solo), five sacks and five forced fumbles.
