Michael Vick Fantasy: NY Jets Bench Geno Smith for Season, Rex Ryan Doubts QB Future as Jameis Winston, Brett Hundley Favored Over Ryan Mallett, Brian Hoyer?

The only win Geno Smith was responsible for this season was over the Oakland Raiders in the first week of the season. He might not get another one this year. The New York Jets are now operating with Michael Vick as their starting quarterback. The veteran got the team an upset win over the Pittsburgh Steelers and looked strong in the process. As a result, head coach Rex Ryan is making it clear that Smith might not return as the starter for the remainder of the season.

Ryan told the media that while he has faith in Smith as a quarterback, the Jets might be more suited to play Vick as their starter for the rest of the year.

"I think Geno is going to get plenty of opportunities, whether it's this year or whenever," Ryan said, via Seth Walder of the New York Daily News. "As I said, I believe in Geno Smith," Ryan continued. "I think he is going to be an outstanding quarterback. I have always said we have two really good quarterbacks, but to say that he is definitely going to get time, I don't know."

At 2-8 on the season, the Jets' playoff hopes are very small. The team looks more suited for a high draft pick than a playoff berth which makes their quarterback situation even more complicated. Vick is playing on a one-year deal and already made comments doubting his future with the Jets. The quarterback intends to continue competing as a starting quarterback and while he certainly loves playing in New York, he wants to start for a team more.

"I like it here," Vick said, via NJ.com. "But that's not my decision to make. Whether I'm in the plans or not, that's the future-I'm going to try to predict that. I'm happy with whatever the situation may be. I understand the type of business that we are in. I'm just going to keep pushing to get better, and that's it."

By the sounds of Ryan, Vick will get the rest of the season to prove why he deserves a contract extension either with the Jets or elsewhere. The Jets need to make a decision regarding their quarterback future since players like Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota will be available for drafting next season. If the Jets are invested in Smith, then re-signing Vick would be wise. However, if they feel the need to try something different then drafting a rookie might be the only option because Mark Sanchez is not coming back.
