Ryan Broyles has certainly had an interesting career with the Detroit Lions. After being a second-round pick in 2012, the wide receiver has been off the field with injuries more times than on the field catching passes from Matthew Stafford. Finally healthy, Broyles was hoping to have a big year in 2014, but so far he has one catch for 21 yards. After sending out a tweet expressing his unhappiness, could Broyles be on the trade block?
Broyles put himself in the news this week when he tweeted out his anger towards the way he was being used in the offense this season. Broyles was only a part of two snaps in the team's win against the Minnesota Vikings, something he felt just was not enough. That lead to Broyles being taken into head coach Jim Caldwell's office to clear the air in order for both to get on the same page going forward. The coach would not go into detail about what was discussed, but said there were no issues between the wide receiver and the rest of the team.
According to CBS Sports, Broyles time with the Lions could easily be coming to a close sooner than maybe both parties would like if the receiver continues to be ineffective on the roster. The quickest way to ensure that one is no longer on a roster is to speak out about being unhappy. Broyles does not have the stats to excuse himself from speaking out on social media which could hurt his future. There are plenty of teams that will be looking for a solid receiver and right now he should probably focus on that.
The Lions have all but replaced him on the roster. They signed Golden Tate in the offseason. They drafted Eric Ebron. Jeremy Ross and Corey Fuller are having sold seasons for the Lions and could easily take care of the offense if Broyles was not active. Tate notes that he certainly understands the frustrations that Broyles is having, but said that he just needs to step up . In the wake of the Calvin Johnson injury, Broyles will be needed to do his part.
This is a very physical game, and injuries are part of it, but we're going to be prepared, and I think the coaching staff and the scouting department have built a team that can win without some of the key players," Tate said, via the Detroit Free Press. Hopefully it starts with this week, and if [Broyles] handles it well and plays well, which we expect him to, just based off the camp he's had and the season he's had already, when his name's been called, I can definitely see, hopefully, some packages being dialed up, but then again, I don't draw the plays, I don't make the personnel. That's up to the way he plays and the coaching staff. But I think he's a great talent. I think he's a huge asset for this team."
