Kirk Cousins is not playing well enough to win football games for the Washington Redskins. The backup quarterback cannot seem to find consistency in his game long enough to put together four quality quarters. As a result, the Redskins are 1-4 and desperately seeking answers. With Robert Griffin III out and Cousins struggling, is it Colt McCoy time in Washington?
Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post reported that the Redskins could be mulling over the idea to start third-string quarterback McCoy in place of the struggling Cousins. Right now, the team has no momentum. The Redskins have drooped four games in a row and Cousins has tossed three or more interceptions in two of those games. On Sunday, he finished with an unimpressive two touchdowns and three interceptions, so it was not crazy to think a change would be made.
However, the Washington Post is now reporting that Jay Gruden and company have no plans to bench Cousins for the upcoming week, but the same cannot be said for the rest of the roster.
"We have to look at the guys in out plan," Gruden said, via the Washington Post. "There's a reason why we have the guys in front of them, but we'll see if there's a way we can upgrade our roster. Mainly I'm looking at maybe ways to prepare, practice, our practice schedule. I'm looking at something, you know. You have to do something a little bit different. Obviously status quo is not doing so well."
Right now, any stats from Cousins are better than what McCoy would offer up. The quarterback has a 60 percent completion rate despite having eight interceptions on the year. The quarterback understands that right now his mistakes are holding the team back from winning and he is vowing to improve in all areas.
"Winning the division, getting into the playoffs, winning in the playoffs," Cousins said, via the team website. "That is something that we are trying to do here and we need to improve obviously. There's places where we are coming up short and when you play this game in this league, the other team is very good, too. And so every time you go out there you have to bring your highest level and the margin for error is very, very small."
The Redskins are hoping to get Griffin back in the mix sooner rather than later. The quarterback is set to begin individual drills after dislocating his ankle. Gruden would not specify how quickly he would return to the field, but if Cousins continues to struggle it is likely he will be placed back in the starting role.
