A lot is being made about the 2015 free agency run for the New York Knicks. The team had a quiet offseason despite re-signing Carmelo Anthony. The Knicks have been linked to several big names for next summer's free agency class, but a few might not work out considering the type of offense New York is now installing under Phil Jackson and Derek Fisher.
Most NBA analysts assume the Knicks will make Rajon Rondo a priority next summer. For 2014, the team traded Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton for Jose Calderon and Samuel Dalembert which was a solid upgrade to the roster. The move also helps the re-building effort since their contracts are more manageable. With others like Amar'e Stoudemire, Andrea Bargnani and possibly Iman Shumpert coming off the books in 2015, New York has the money to make a run at Rondo who will be an unrestricted free agent, but will he work in the triangle offense?
According to the New York Post, there is a lot of doubt that the Knicks will chase Rondo because they are not certain he is the right type of player for the triangle offense. The Post makes the case saying that Rondo is not a solid perimeter shooter, something that is crucial for the Knicks' new offense. In order to run Jackson's plan, the point guard must be a strong outside shooter along with everyone else on the court. Rondo's shot has improved over the years, but might not be up to what Jackson wants. With several other big names hitting the market also next summer, the Knicks have options outside of the Boston Celtics star.
There has been some speculation over what the Knicks will do at the point guard position. Calderon will start this season and if he plays well, the Knicks might use him as a trade piece come next summer. They have been favoring players like Greg Monroe and Roy Hibbert and could use the point guard to help negotiate a deal. Calderon should function well in the triangle offense this year, making a case to keep him around for the long term.
