NY Jets Rumors: Geno Smith Starts Over Michael Vick as Rex Ryan Fired With Losses To Broncos and Patriots?

Oct 08, 2014 12:34 PM EDT

The NY Jets have a quarterback controversy with Geno Smith struggling and Michael Vick waiting in the wings and now Rex Ryan could be on the hot seat and his job security has come into question, as New York as a new GM that did not get to pick the coach and with him on basically a one year deal, he could be done in the Big Apple if he doesn't turn the team around after four straight losses.

The Jets have now lost four straight games since winning over the Raiders in Week 1 and in the matchup with the Chargers, Geno Smith was benched halfway for Michael Vick. The Jets were embarrassed and while Rex Ryan was confident that the team can turn it around, they are about to play two very tough games against the Denver Broncos and the rival New England Patriots. According to ESPN.com, the team has not disciplined Smith for missing a meeting with playing time, as he started last week and will this week and that could be an issue going forward.

Smith has not played well and continues to have the most turnovers of any player in the league dating back to last season. Ryan may be on the hot seat and if he doesn't turn it around, he could be fired. Ryan acknowledged this himself, saying that he likely would have been fired if the season ended today. Either way, the Jets are a mess right now and they look terrible on offense and now their vaunted defense looks weak as well after losing to a strong Chargers team.

Ryan has been up against the wall with the Smith and Vick situation, as Vick is not the player he once was and since Ryan was the man who wanted Geno Smith so bad, he feels he has to stick with him. Ryan now has a record of 43-42 in his career with the Jets and while he has won four of his six playoff games, those came years ago and he has not brought his team to the playoffs since 2010. Ryan ran Mark Sanchez out of town even if he doesn't act like he did and now he is treating Geno Smith with kids' gloves, as he thinks benching a player may ruin his confidence. If Smith is good and is a professional, he would understand that the move Ryan makes is in the interests of the team and the season.

Ryan has not done well in the past couple years and while the team was 8-8 last season, that was hit best finish since 11 wins in 2010. The team has gone 8-8 in two of the past three seasons and 6-10 in 2012 and now they are on the verge of losing the entire season. The team is 1-4 and they are about the play against Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, meaning they easily could be 1-6 when this is all done. Smith was taken out against the Chargers and Vick did not do much better and now the Jets have some major decisions to make.
