NY Jets Rumors: Geno Smith Benched For Michael Vick Start After Chargers Loss, Missed Meeting Against Broncos?

Oct 06, 2014 04:07 PM EDT

The NY Jets are coming off of a terrible loss to the Chargers in Week 5 and while Geno Smith was benched in that game for Michael Vick at quarterback, Rex Ryan has decided to stick with Smith to start in Week 6 against the Denver Broncos and this comes after his interceptions, struggles against the Chargers, a missed meeting and his cursing at fans.

The Jets were the first team to get shutout this season and they ended up losing 31-0 to the Chargers in San Diego, their third straight loss of the season. According to ESPN.com, Rex Ryan wants to stick by Smith for now and that the loss on Sunday doesn't make him think that Smith can't get things done. Ryan has had to defend himself and the team for possibly coaching to help Geno and not help the team win, but with Ryan on the hot seat, he claimed that what he is doing is what he thinks is best to help the team win.

Smith reportedly missed a meeting due to the issues about the time difference on the west coast and that was why he was not panelized for that. Vick did not look all that great coming in for Smith in the game on Sunday and that could be one reason why Ryan wants to stick with Geno. The Daily News called for Tim Tebow to return to the Jets to take over after what happened this week, but clearly that is not happening.

Smith started the game on Sunday but was pulled at halftime and this has not been the best start for the Jets. The team was confident and riding high after winning over the terrible Raiders, but now they have lost four in a row and fans are calling for changes. The team signed Vick as the backup to Smith and now they may have to make a change if he continues to struggle and turn the ball over. Smith was pulled at halftime of this game and adding in Vick did not get things going much better, as they were down 21-0 at that point and did not score, with the game ending 31-0.

The Jets have been a mess this season after coming into the year with tons of confidence and Smith now has more turnovers than touchdowns once again. Smith has more turnovers than anyone in the league since last season and now he could be benched if he doesn't get it done this week. The Broncos are a tough team and obviously the Jets will not be favored in the matchup. Vick did not do much to get the starting job based on his play on Sunday, but with the game plan tailored for him, he could have more success.

The game will be at home so that is a gift and a curse, as they will be home against a tough team, but their fans have been chanting for Vick for weeks. Smith cursed out a fan after the last loss at the stadium and now he will be back under center for Week 6.
