Aug 27, 2014 10:17 PM EDT

The LA Galaxy and DC United are playing live on the MLS schedule on Wednesday night and the matchup is in Los Angeles from Carson at the StubHub Center starting up at 10:30 pm ET as the east and west teams battle and the matchup is streaming live from MLS.com and has Landon Donovan leading the way as the team tries to stay in playoff position.

This is one of the top matchups of the Major League Soccer season and the matchup comes as the Galaxy are closing in on the first place spot on the west table, five points back of the leaders. The team comes in with two wins in the week after beating the Vancouver Whitecaps and the United had a big matchup before this, winning over the league leading Sporting Kansas City team and now DC is in the top spot.

This is the first time these two teams are playing this season and the Galaxy come in having not been beaten in nine games against DC and they are trying to keep that going. The United side hasn't won in Carson for nearly 10 years and with the way LA is playing, it will be even tougher to do. Los Angeles comes in after winning the second game of the week after beating the Caps at home and they now are in fourth place in the conference and within striking distance of the top spot with 40 points in 23 games.

The last time these the Galaxy played a game the team took the lead four minutes in with a goal from Landon Donovan and he was in the news this week since he will be playing in one friendly for Team USA before retiring. Donovan has been playing well as of late and he could be a factor as the team tries to make it three wins in a row after also winning over Colorado during the week and if they continue this stretch, they could be just a couple points back of first place.

The Eastern conference is getting very tight at the top and the separation is getting biggers, as DC is now in first place by one point over Sporting KC. The team has a near 10 point lead over Toronto, while Columbus and New York are next in the standings. New England and Philly are close to playoff contention, while the Chicago Fire and Dynamo are hanging in.

The western conference is getting very interesting with the play of LA as of late, as they are just five points out, with the Seattle Sounders leading the conference. Dallas is tied for second with 42 points with Real Salt Lake, while LA and Vancouver are next in the standings. The Portland Timbers are sixth ahead of the Rapids and the San Jose Earthquakes.
