Miami Dolphins Rumors: Knowshon Moreno Released if Daniel Thomas, Lamar Miller Improve? LaMichael James, Mark Ingram Trade Options for Ryan Tannehill

Knowshon Moreno did not have the greatest offseason. For a running back coming off the best season of his career, he took several steps backwards after the Super Bowl. His free agency run was not the easiest considering how low the market value is for running backs. He managed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins and repaid them by showing up out of shape and injured. With several players chasing his spot, could Moreno be released if he does not improve?

Moreno's status with the Dolphins is certainly shaky. Working off a one-year contract does not offer the running back a lot of security and showing up not ready to work is not helping his case for the future. The Dolphins brought Moreno on because they were desperate for a more stable ground game, hoping that helps Ryan Tannehill in his third year at quarterback. After signing a contract with $1.25 million in guarantee cash, Miami has expectations they expect to be met.

According to NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal, there is a real chance that Moreno gets released if he fails to step things up in training camp. Behind Moreno is returning runners, Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas, both of which replaced the running back on the depth chart during offseason workouts as the former Denver Bronco got demoted. Head coach Joe Philbin noted that he would be putting the best players on the field regardless of their resume and contract status and right now, Moreno is not part of that group.

The Dolphins could still make a late move for another running back leading into training camp. If neither Moreno, Miller of Thomas impress in the mix, the Dolphins are not left with much. They team could be in play for someone like LaMichael James who continues to express his unhappiness with the San Francisco 49ers. He is likely on his way out which could benefit Miami.

There are also a few free agents left on the market that certainly lack impressive numbers, but could be quality rotational guys. Felix Jones is still sitting around waiting for a team to call. Willis McGahee is also available. Moreno will have every chance in the world to keep his roster spot considering his contract, but if Miami is forced to do something. He could be on the way out.
